Today marks the start of the 2017 Atlantic Basin hurricane season and we have the list of all the names that are in play. If you're like me, you hope that we never actually hear these names in the same sentence as Acadiana, but here we are. After years of odd-ball names that were hard to pronounce, we're getting some help. The National Weather Service in New Orleans release a names and pronunciations list for this year's storms.

Sound familiar? Some names are recycled year to year. There are actually six lists that repeat every six years. According to NOAA, the only exception is when there is a particularly damaging storm. Names like Andrew, Katrina and Rita are all removed from the list. Storm naming goes back to 1953 when meteorologists. In the event that more than twenty-one named tropical cyclones in a given season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet. The last time this happened was during the very busy 2005 season.
