Actor George Gaynes, who gained fame as a foster parent on "Punky Brewster" and Commandant Lassard on the "Police Academy" movies, has died at the age of 98.

He was at his daughter's home in Washingon state on Monday when he passed.

Gaynes was not only a character actor but he was also a baritone singer. He made hundreds of appearances on TV comedies and dramas, as well as a total of 35 films and many plays, musical comedies and even operas, both in the U.S. and Europe.

He would retire from acting in 2003 after appearing in the comedy "Just Married" starring Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy.

George Gaynes is survived by his wife of 62 years, Allyn, along with a daughter, one granddaughter and two great-granddaughters. His son, Matthew, died in a 1989 car crash.
