A small Air Force helicopter has reportedly crashed in the Atchafalaya Basin. 

KATC TV-3 reports that the crash happened in the Atchafalaya Basin in the Iberia Parish panhandle. According to Sheriff Louis Ackal, one person is in the water and a search/rescue effort is currently underway.

The report suggests that the helicopter had departed from Gonzalez and was heading to Patterson when it went missing. The Coast Guard says it is on the scene searching for wreckage.

UPDATE: The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office now says the helicopter that crashed in the Atchafalaya Basin is a civilian helicopter. Sheriff Louis Ackal tells us that he was initially told the craft was a military helicopter, but he later learned that it was not.
