Auditors researching employees at the University of Louisiana Lafayette's primate lab in New Iberia stole more than $10,000 worth of items from the lab.  The auditors say they took batteries, materials and metal which were sold at a scrap yard.

Auditors say the thefts happened over the course of a two-year period.

The legislative audit includes in their findings, that manager of the New Iberia Research Center waited weeks before notifying police that a cellphone was missing.  While the phone was missing for the two weeks someone made $16,000 in calls.

The audit also found that $12,000 worth of thefts were not reported for up to a year.

University officials have responded saying they are taking steps to make changes.
