An employee with the Town of Mamou was fired after town administrators discovered that he, or she, was allegedly stealing brass fittings for water valves and water meters.

Though few details are available at this time, according to a state legislative auditor's report, the former employee would dismantle the valves and meters and sell the brass casings as scrap metal.

The town administrators discovered the thefts, sometime during the fiscal year 2014, during a routine inventory check. The employee was terminated soon after.

The 2014 audit, conducted by an external CPA, earned the town a "D" rating because at least one instance of fraud or abuse was discovered.
