The school bells are ringing across Acadiana and today marks the first day of class for students in Lafayette Parish. Students in St. Mary, Jeff Davis, Iberia, and Vermilion Parishes have already had their first day.

Tomorrow the ringing bells and rumble of buses will welcome back students in Acadia, St. Martin, and St. Landry with Evangeline Parish holding their first day of classes on Thursday.

Drivers are cautioned to be mindful of school zone speed limits. You are also invited to review the rules of the road as they pertain to school buses. There is often confusion on some streets and major roadways what the proper protocol is when approaching a stopped school bus.

There is also a new law in effect around the state regarding the use of cell phones in active school zones. Traffic officers have been instructed to monitor motorist and if motorist are observed using a cell phone in a  school zone there is now a fine associated with that behavior.  Here is a reminder from me to you, school zones are in effect in the afternoon too. That means when your student gets into their car and picks up the phone to call a friend on the way out of the  parking lot, they could be ticketed too.
