Imagine a Lafayette street where traffic flows smoothly. A street where bicycles and pedestrians move among restaurants and beautifully landscaped sidewalks. There is a smell of delicious food and the sound of conversation and live  music too. This is what organizers of Better Block Bertrand hope to demonstrate on Saturday.

Betrand Drive from the LUS water tower to Legends restaurant will undergo a transformation between 10am and 5pm. The concept of the Better Block program is designed to show the public and local officials what a particular stretch of roadway might look like if these additions and amenities were added on a permanent basis.

The program is part of the Complete Streets program that encourages implementation of more walkable, bicycle friendly, safer and more aesthetically pleasing streets to better meet the needs of people in a particular neighborhood. During the Better Block Bertrand event temporary landscaping, outdoor seating, and local food trucks will be set up to give those in attendance a realistic glimpse of what the area could look like.

During the event there will be no detour routes on Bertrand as the street will not be closed. However motorist are reminded that there will be temporary speed reductions and perhaps more pedestrian traffic in the area during this time.
