Drew Brees is not a doctor and I'm pretty sure he didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night either. He is a very gifted quarterback and the undisputed leader of the New Orleans Saints Football team.

He is also injured. The injury that he has is a torn plantar fascia. It's a very painful foot injury. Is it debilitating? No. Does it hurt like watching a Kardashian sing? Even worse.

Drew Brees told the media on Christmas Eve that he will  be playing on Sunday when the Saints take the field against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brees told reporters,

I'm going to play, I wanna play for my guys.

The fact is this. It is possible for an NFL quarterback to play with a torn plantar fascia. Peyton Manning did it earlier this year and smoked the Green Bay Packers. The next game he threw four interceptions and was benched. So there is an upside and a downside to this injury. It gets better with rest and it gets worse with activity. Manning was brilliant after two weeks of rest and totally awful after less than a week of rest.

Says Brees,

It has his challenges but we've come up with a good plan for this week..how to support it and how to try to make it as manageable as possible.

Brees is being evaluated by team doctors on a daily basis. The feeling among New Orleans beat reporters who cover the Saints is that Brees will sit out today's practice. Most likely we will know if Brees is going to play on Sunday morning when NFL teams are required to submit their game roster.

My guess is that he will be on that roster and he will be on the field. How long  he stays on the field will depend on how well the rest of the team is able to rally around their leader and captain.
