Broussard's Fourth of July fireworks display will be cancelled this year

The city's administrative assistant Cindy Castille told KPEL the city council was leaning toward the decision of canceling the festivities for about a month because of the economic downturn of the oil and gas industry..

She said some local businesses would donate some supplies, but most of the money used to fund the display was from the city's coffers.

Expenses for the display are not only incurred from the fireworks and supplies, but also from having to provide law enforcement and traffic support.

The Broussard Economic Development office has organized the festivities in the past, but soon the Fourth of July and Christmas Festivities will be handled by local civic organizations.
