An area of disturbed weather moving into the Southern Gulf of Mexico has residents keeping a watchful eye on the tropics.
The beginning of June brings warm weather, new flowers and less joyfully, the start of hurricane season.
Hurricane preparedness week started May 27 and it lasts until June 2. We are quite familiar with hurricane season and the official hurricane season starts this Friday, June 1. The coast of Louisiana and Texas have faced hurricanes many times. FEMA (The Federal Emergency Management Agency) and NOAA (The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) are partnering together to promote 2012 National Hurricane Preparedness Week.

This is not about the surface of the Gulf, this is about the bottom, the deepest part of the Gulf of Mexico and you are invited to descend to the ocean floor live and have a look around.
Battling through tropical storm conditions in the Bay of Campeche rescuers located a lifeboat from the Trinity II. Inside the lifeboat capsule they found 7 of the rig workers alive, two had perished and the 10th was still missing. South Louisiana residents Jeremy Parfait and Ted Derise were listed among the survivors.

The four workers from Acadiana have been identified as Jeremy Parfait of Houma, Craig Myers, Ted Derise Jr., and Nick Reed all of New Iberia. These men are all employed by Trinity Liftboats LLC of New Iberia.
In our state of Louisiana we usually think of hurricanes as our biggest worry in the natural disaster department. What's good about a hurricane is usually we have some advanced warning and can take the proper precautions. The wildfires in our neighboring state of Texas are very different.
