Longtime "60 Minutes" correspondent Bob Simon was killed yesterdayin a car accident in New York City. He was 73.

According to police, a town car in which Simon was in hit another car in Manhattan. Simon and the car's driver were taken to a hospital where Simon was later pronounced dead.

Bob Simon was amongst a handful of elite reporters to cover most major overseas conflicts and news stories since the 1960s, CBS said.

He was infamously held captive for more than a month in Iraq two decades ago.

Simon has been part of "60 Minutes" on a regular basis since 1996. He was also a correspondent for "60 Minutes II".

Simon is survived by his wife, Françoise, and their daughter, Tanya. Tanya is a producer for "60 Minutes".
