Championship Saturday Set In Sun Belt Conference Tournament
The final day of the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship is set for Saturday at Lamson Park, with the top-seed, Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns, taking on second-seeded South Alabama in the championship game.
First-pitch is scheduled for 3 o’clock.
This will mark the second time the two teams have met in the tournament, with South Alabama winning, 4-2, in eight innings over Louisiana in a winners bracket game on Friday afternoon.
The Cajuns bounced backed to eliminate ULM, 14-6, later on Friday, to advance into the title game.
South Alabama is the defending tournament champions, winning the event last year in Troy, Alabama, while the Cajuns have claimed the title an unprecedented 11 times, including their last tourney win in 2011.
Louisiana holds an all-time record of 48-6 in the Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship, winning their first 21 games in their first seven seasons, winning every single tourney crown, from the years 2000-2006.
After not winning the event in 2007, the Cajuns went on another run, winning 17-straight tournament games, and four-consecutive tournament titles, from the years 2008-2011
Louisiana (43-8-1) defeated South Alabama (41-11) in two of the three regular season meeting, before the Jaguars won the tournament game on Friday, to even-up the season series, 2-2.
The Cajuns defeated WKU, 5-3, on Thursday, on a walk-off grand slam home run by Shellie Landry in the bottom half of the seventh inning, before falling to the Jaguars, 4-2, on Friday, and then eliminating ULM, 14-6.
Louisiana had their 13-game win streak come to an end on Friday, but they have still won 35 of their last 38 games.
South Alabama defeated ULM, 8-1, on Thursday, before tripping up the Cajuns on Friday.
The winner receives an automatic bid into an NCAA Regional, while the loser should receive an at-large bid, although that isn’t guaranteed.
