To be honest most of us aren't really sure what we are supposed to do when we see a school bus stopped with its stop sign out and flashing lights on. Okay, we know what to do if we are behind the bus or in front of the bus on a two lane road. What if it's a four lane road? What if it's a two lane road separated by a turn lane? What if it's a four lane  road separated by a median? See it gets confusing and it's been a while since most of us have read our Louisiana Driver's manual.

The Louisiana Senate has already approved a measure that would change at least one aspect of traffic laws regarding school buses. That measure was approved by the House Transportation Committee yesterday. The change is this, oncoming traffic must stop for a school bus on a two-lane road with a continuous turn left turn lane.

Terry Landry, who represents New Iberia, thinks the law will alleviate some confusion among motorist.

I think that the turn lanes are not a divided road and I think we're putting our children at risk because some of them cross those lanes.

I happen to agree with Mr. Landry, not that you asked, I just wanted to say I was one of the few, the proud, the confused. Terry's comments by the way were reported in a story published by the Louisiana Radio Network.

The measure passed the Transportation Committee without opposition. It will now be debated in front of the full house later this week.
