I've seen possum, raccoons, armadillos and of course nutria roaming Lafayette, and now residents around The Cajundome are reporting seeing a coyote.

Virginia Lee,  supervisor for Lafayette Animal Control tells KATC that she's received several calls in the past few weeks about coyote sightings.

Lee tells KATC "We've messed up their habitat," Lee said. "It's a good thing and it's a bad thing for the coyotes, but it's good for us because we build things."

Lee suggests not leaving dog and cat food outside for long periods, and not leaving pets outside if you want to try and avoid attracting coyotes around your property.

From KATC -

They typically want small rodents - small type animals, dogs and cats as well. If we leave our dogs and cats loose and let them run about, especially into the woods, they will certainly become prey of a coyote if there's one around.

If you do spot a coyote, report the sighting to your local animal control.
