Despite Davis’ Superb Play, Hornets Fall To Magic

Anthony Davis’ 17 points, 15 rebounds, and 4 blocks were wasted as the New Orleans Hornets (21-40) blew a big second half lead at home, falling to the Orlando Magic (17-44) Monday night by the score of 105-102.

Ryan Anderson did not fare well against his former team. The Hornets forward was scoreless in the first half, and finished the game with 13 points on 4-9 shooting. His +/- ratio was -26, a staggering number for a reliable player such as Anderson.

After their lead ballooned to 17 points in the third quarter, the Hornets did two things that allowed Orlando to get back in the game. For one, turnovers. New Orleans turned it over 12 times, allowing the Magic to convert 18 easy points. By comparison, the Hornets only got 2 points off Magic turnovers all night. (Orlando ranks last in the league in turnover margin). Secondly, New Orleans became stagnant on offense, failing to properly execute their half court offense with sound ball movement and smart shot selection.

Eric Gordon had a solid outing for New Orleans, scoring 17 and dishing out 5 assists. Greivis Vasquez finished with 17 and 8, but was responsible for 4 turnovers.

On paper, there aren’t a plethora of teams in the NBA the Hornets are more talented than. Orlando was one, but games aren’t played on paper, and New Orleans blew an opportunity to capture a home victory.

Perhaps Wednesday they’ll put forth a better effort. The Lakers come into town Wednesday, one night after a big road contest at Oklahoma City against the Thunder. The Hornets should try and run a fast-paced, up tempo style early and take advantage of what should be some tired Laker legs. Tip-off from the Hive is set for 7:00.
