Shelley Dufresne, one of two former Destrehan High School teachers accused of having sex with a 16-year-old student has reportedly accepted a plea deal. The plea deal reportedly will allow her to avoid any jail time or having to register as a sex offender. These stipulations could be only temporary however.

The St. Charles Parish District Attorney’s Office and Dufresne’s attorney announced the details of the plea agreement this morning.

Dufresne was facing one felony count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile which if convicted would have gotten her 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

"Dufresne pleaded guilty to one felony count of obscenity and in return received a deferred sentence of three years in prison, three years of active probation and a $1,000 fine.

She will avoid serving any time on condition that she avoid contact with the victim and his family and complete 90 days of treatment at a mental health facility by the end of August. She will also have to forfeit her teachers’ license.

The original carnal knowledge charge will be held open during her probation period."
