Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun head coach Mark Hudspeth signed a six-year extension over a month ago. Today, the University unveiled the details of the deal.

Hudspeth’s new deal will pay him a base salary of $950,000 a year. With incentives and retention annuities, the number grows to over $1,000,000. His new deal runs through 2019. Upon approval by the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors, Hudspeth will be the highest paid coach in the Sun Belt Conference. Arkansas State’s Blake Anderson comes in second with an average of $700,000 a year.

The Advertiser’s Tim Buckley reports that in order for a school to buyout coach Hudsepth in the first year of this extension, it would cost them $1.25 million.

Hudsepth, who reportedly signed the deal last month, is happy about the extension.

“I’m very appreciative to (University President) Dr. Savoie, (Director of Athletics) Scott Farmer, and the Board of Supervisors for putting their trust in myself and our coaching staff,” Hudspeth said in a press release. “I’m very pleased with the contract. It’s good for both parties. This adds a lot of stability to our program in terms of recruiting and fans will see that both parties are committed to a common goal, and that is continuing to build our football program one day at a time.

“This also says that we’re ready to take the next step in becoming a major program. I’m proud to be a part of our university and I’m proud to be the head coach of the Ragin’ Cajuns.”

In three seasons at Louisiana, coach Hudspeth has led the Cajuns to a 27-12 record overall, three straight New Orleans Bowl championships, and a Sun Belt Conference championship in 2013.

“The new contract is a show of faith between the University and Coach Hudspeth in that both sides agree the football program is headed in the right direction,” Farmer said in a press release. “Since his arrival on campus, Coach Hudspeth’s personality, work ethic and presence in the community have transformed our football program into a consistent winner, and have led to record attendance at Cajun Field. We could not have done this without the tremendous support of our fans.”

Louisiana opens their season August 30th at Cajun Field when they host Southern at 6:00.
