You probably have noticed by now that the I-10 widening project between Lafayette and Breaux Bridge is underway. As a result, the Department of Transportation and Development has introduced its mapping program to the area.

The Motorist Assistance Patrol program, or MAP, will help with traffic flow during construction. The 2-year, nearly $200 million widening project began a few weeks ago on I-10 between I-49 and the Basin Bridge.

There are an estimated 60,000 drivers that travel that stretch of I-10 daily and the DOTD will now have three map program trucks patrolling the area.

Those trucks will help reduce back-up by providing service to stalled or stranded vehicles. If you find yourself stranded and need assistance, you are encouraged to dial *LSP.

Deidra Druilhet with the DOTD says, "When you add construction to an area where you see a high volume of traffic and there's a lot of through traffic, we definitely want to make sure that we are doing everything that we can to reduce congestion and keep traffic moving through the construction zone."

The construction project will widen that 7-mile stretch of the interstate in both directions to three lanes.
