There is nothing like the thrill of holding a ticket on a horse that is leading down the stretch at Evangeline Downs. The most timid amongst us will suddenly develop a voice louder than a battleship horn to cheer their horse and rider on to victory. A day at the track is one of the most enjoyable outings you could ever have either by yourself or with a group of friends. It's even more enjoyable when the stakes are kicked up the way they are this Saturday at Evangeline Downs.

Saturday is the second edition of the Evangeline Downs Turf Sprint Day. It's a day that will feature four incredible races on turf and main course at the Opelousas facility. It will also feature some of the biggest purses in Louisiana racing.

The first of the four featured events will go off as Race #5 in your program. It's the Opelousas Stakes. This race if for three year old fillies and mares. The horse and rider will be traveling a mile and a sixteenth for a purse of $100,000.

The second featured race is Race #6 in your program. That will be the Evangeline Mile and as you probably figured out the distance is one mile on the main track, not the turf. This race is for horses that are three years old and up running for a purse of $100,00.

The third featured race will be the $70,000 Lafayette Stakes it is Race #7. This is for three year old Louisiana bred horses. They will be traveling seven furlongs on the main track.

The fourth and final featured race will be Race #8 the $300,000 Evangeline Downs Turf Sprint. This race features some of the fastest turf sprinters in the world. Horses that are three years old and up will compete on the turf course in an all out mad dash of five furlongs.

If you really want to test your skill and puff up your pocket book these four races have been combined into a Pick Four. That means if you can pick the winner of all four races, you will be buying dinner for a lot of new friends. It's a tough wager but I wouldn't be surprised if somebody didn't walk away with a lot of money from the cashiers window.

Post time for this special day of racing is at 3:05 on Saturday afternoon. It is anticipated the the first of the featured races will go to post at 5:15 Central Time. Wagering will be available at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas or through any of their authorized Off Track Betting Facilities.
