Additional Information

Space is still available for exhibitors to share their careers with more than 4,000 10th graders from Lafayette, Iberia, St. Martin, and Vermilion parishes during 2014 Career Connections. The event, in its 15th year, invites public, private, and home-schooled 10th graders in these parishes to discover a multitude of careers that are available to them.

Career Connections will take place Tuesday, February 4, 2014 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Cajundome Convention Center. Past years have boasted more than 90 career booths for students to explore. Some of the booths include banks and finance companies, armed services, oilfield companies, health care services, and more. Businesses are needed to participate in this event.

In past years, students have asked for more companies in the following careers: dentists, plumbers, physicians, veterinarians, sociologists, psychologists, and automotive technicians. Sponsors are also needed to help cover event expenses and assist governmental and nonprofit agencies with the booth fee.

The Reality Store, a popular attraction, teaches students about life expenses such as housing, transportation, leisure, and family life. Students make decisions on what kinds of homes, cars, and family sizes they want, and students then learn how much they need to make to afford the lifestyle they chose. Surveys from past years have found that students have a better understanding of their likely career paths, and students who participated in the event were more likely to graduate from high school.
