Considering that Louisiana is known as 'Hollywood of the South', we have a lot of filming going on all over our beautiful state. But how many of those films were actually about the Bayou State? I did some investigating, and am listing my Top Ten favorites below. These are not all of them, by any means, just some that I could watch over and over again. So grab your popcorn, and enjoy!

  • Steel Magnolias - shot in 1989 in Natchitoches. All star cast, including Julia Roberts, and Dolly Parton. You can even take a tour of the filming locations
  • Beasts of the Southern Wild - 2012 - nominated for 4 Academy Awards, and starring adorable six year old Quvenzhané Wallis
  • The Skeleton Key - 2005 film starring Kate Hudson. Won the Saturn Award for Best Horror Film. Incredibly creepy. This movie is what everybody who doesn't live in Louisiana thinks about living in Louisiana
  • Monster's Ball - 2001 - Halle Berry won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in this movie that was partially filmed at Angola State Penitentiary
  • The Big Easy -1987 - this might be my favorite, even though the cajun accents are pretty horrible. I love Dennis Quaid in his role of Remy McSwain. And the music throughout the film is all cajun and zydeco, which is completely awesome
  • 12 Years a Slave - 2013 - really disturbing true story about Soloman Northrup, a free black man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Louisiana in 1841. A cabin he helped build while enslaved is still standing in Alexandria, La. It's called the Edwin Epps House
  • Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte - 1964 - A classic horror movie starring Bette Davis, and set in a decaying mansion on the bayou. Will you ever be the same after seeing that decapitated head rolling down the staircase??!
  • The Drowning Pool - 1975 - who can forget when superstar actor Paul Newman came to town? Filmed in Lafayette at what is now the UL Lafayette Alumni Center on St Mary
  • Dead Man Walking - 1995 - Based on the true story of Sister Helen Prejean, and her friendship with convicted murderer and Death Row inmate Matthew Poncelet
  • A Streetcar Named Desire - 1951- Marlon Brando. Vivian Leigh. Need we say more? One of the most famous movies about New Orleans ever made
