Believe it or not, the second half of the 2013 high school football season begins this week, and below are the five games in the Acadiana area to keep an eye on.

1)---Acadiana at Comeaux

Acadiana is 4-1 on the year, after that thrilling 35-33 win over Barbe last week. The Wrecking Rams, who are ranked number three in this week's LSWA class 4A poll, also have wins over Northside, Rummel, and Lafayette High, while suffering their only setback to Neville.

Comeaux is also 4-1, and is off to one of the better starts in school history. The Spartans have wins over Cecilia, Alexandria, Sam Houston, and Carencro, with their only loss coming against Breaux Bridge.

Acadiana is the favorite in this District 3-5A match-up, and should be, but Comeaux is playing with a lot of confidence right now, and Acadiana has to be wary of a letdown after that emotional victory of the previously top-ranked Barbe Buccaneers last week.

These are two well-coached teams, who are both having really good years.

This one should be a fun.

2)---Westgate at St. Thomas More

St. Thomas More is 5-0, and 1-0 in District 5-4A play, after opening district play with an impressive 62-16 win over Cecilia last week.

The Cougars, who are ranked third in this week 4A poll, have rolled to impressive victories over Calvary Baptist (44-19), Carencro (31-0), Evangel (26-0), and Cecilia, after a hard-fought season-opening win over Sulphur (10-7),

Westgate, who is 3-2, has wins over Carencro, Franklin, and Northside, with losses against New Iberia and Breaux Bridge.

STM has been one of the most impressive teams in the state, in any classification, throughout the first half of the year, but Westgate's history in that they seem to rise to the occasion against the top teams.

3)---Northside at Breaux Bridge

This is a big District 5-4A contest between two teams that have become very familiar with one another over the years.

Breaux Bridge, who boasts one of the top defenses in the area, is 2-3, overall, and 1-1 in district play. The Tigers have wins over Comeaux and Westgate, with losses coming to New Iberia, Notre Dame, and Teurlings.

Northside is 1-4, and and 1-1, respectively, with their lone win coming against St. Martinville, with losses coming at the hands of Acadiana, Carencro, Evangel, and Westgate.

I understand that both of these teams are under .500, but those that follow high school football in this area know that that doesn't tell the entire story.

Breaux Bridge has suffered three losses by a grand total of 11 points, with one loss coming to a 5A team (New Iberia), and two others to ranked teams (Notre Dame and Teurlings), while the Vikings have been much-improved over the last two weeks, with a big win over St. Martinville (40-14) two weeks ago, and a close loss to Westgate (21-14) last week.

Whoever wins this game will be 2-1 in district play, and that will be a nice record to have through three weeks in a brutal District 5-4A.

4)---St. Martinville at Cecilia

It's St. Martinville and Cecilia. What else needs to be said?

St. Martinville is 2-3, while Cecilia is 1-4, but both teams have showed flashes, if not consistency this year.

This is another important District 5-4A game, but again, it's St. Martinville and Cecilia, so most of St. Martin Parish, and Acadiana, will be paying attention to this longtime rivalry game.

5)---Lafayette Christian at Ascension Episcopal

District 7-1A is a tough district, and you don't have to look any farther than this match-up to see why. Both teams are 3-2, overall, but both are winless in district play.

Ascension Episcopal has wins over Grand Lake, False River, and Ascension Christian, with losses to Opelousas Catholic and Hanson.

Lafayette Christian won their first three this year, defeating Ascension Christian, Houma Christian, and Hamilton Christian, before suffering back-to-back losses to Vermilion Catholic and Hanson.

This may be the most underrated match-up in the area this week, between two up-and-coming programs that are good right now, but will only get better, with time.

To add to this game is that history will be made, with Ascension Episcopal opening up their brand new stadium. This will be the first game ever played there.
