Believe it or not, it's already week number four of the the 2013 high school football season, and there are a number of in interesting games once again this week in the Acadiana area.

These are the five games that, from a match-up standpoint, I find as the most interesting this week.

1)---ST. THOMAS MORE vs. EVANGEL

This one is not only the best match-up involving an Acadiana area team, it also is one of the top games in the state.

St. Thomas More is off to a 4-0 start, and ranked number three in the latest LSWA Class 4A poll. The Cougars have wins over Sulphur (10-7), Calvary Baptist (44-19), and Carencro (31-0), outscoring their opponents, 85-26 in the process.

Evangel is also 3-0, and ranked third in this week's 3A poll. The Eagles have wins over Riverside (29-22), Ouachita (41-34), and Northside (45-0), and have outscored their opponents, 115-56.

These two schools are not unfamiliar with one another, meeting for the fifth-consecutive time. St. Thomas More won the first three meetings, before Evangel captured a thrilling, 36-33, win a season ago.

The Cougars will be looking to avenge that loss, and high school football fans throughout both the area, and the state, will be keeping close tabs on how this one turns out.

2)---ACADIANA at LAFAYETTE HIGH

The two schools, who are longtime rivals, have had some epic battles in the past, and this District 3-5A contest has all the makings off another good one.

Acadiana is 2-1, and ranked fifth in this week's 5A poll. The Wrecking Rams captured an impressive, 42-28, win over Rummel last week, after falling to Neville, 35-28, the week prior.

The Rams have an October 4th showdown against top-ranked Barbe in one week, so the have to guard against looking ahead.

Lafayette High is 2-1, with back-to-back wins over Opelousas and Alexandria, after a 43-42 shootout loss to Kaplan during opening week.

The Lions offense has been potent so far this year, scoring 131 points in three games. they'll likely have to continue that pace, if they hope to pull the big upset on Friday night.

What a way for these two teams to open up district play!

3)---ST. MARTINVILLE at NORTHSIDE

This one may not jump out at high school football fans the way that St. Thomas/Evangel or Lafayette High/Acadiana does, but this is the District 5-4A opener for two teams that will be looking to prove that they belong in the same discussion as district favorites St. Thomas More, Teurlings, Westgate, and Breaux Bridge.

St. Martinville won their first two games, defeating Jennings (34-31) and and Assumption (27-26), before falling to a solid Eunice team last week, 12-7.

The Tigers, who are receiving votes in the Class 4A poll, have played three close games, with all of them being decided by five points, or less.

Northside may be winless, at 0-3, but the Vikings have lost to two juggernauts, in Acadiana and Evangel, and came up just a tad short in a 23-18 setback to Carencro.

The district is brutal, so it's pivotal for both of these teams to pick up a win this week.

4)---WESTGATE at BREAUX BRIDGE

This one is another big District 5-4A game.

With this district featuring such teams as St. Thomas More, Teurlings, St. Martinville, Cecilia, Northside, and these two teams, good teams will lose multiple game, and every district match-up is a big one.

Breaux Bridge has to be one of the best 1-2 teams in the state. The Tigers defeated previously unbeaten Comeaux last week, 20-13, after close losses to 5A New Iberia, 14-13 in week one, and Notre Dame, 3-0, in week two.

Westgate is also 2-1. After wins over Carencro (19-6) and Franklin (31-7) in the first two weeks, the Tigers fell for the first time last week, losing to New Iberia, 17-7.

5)---LAFAYETTE CHRISTIAN at VERMILION CATHOLIC

This is the District 7-1A opener for two undefeated teams.

Vermilion Catholic is ranked third in this week's Class A poll. The Screaming Eagles are not only 3-0 on the young season, but have also won all three games from teams in higher classifications, defeating Catholic-New Iberia (20-17) and Welsh (39-14), two Class 2A teams, as well as Erath (28-19), from the 3A ranks.

Lafayette Christian hasn't played the schedule that Vermilion Catholic has played, but the Knights have been impressive in their own right, outscoring their opponents, 109-28, over their first three contests.

Most districts begin district play this week, so enjoy the great match-ups.
