Friday, March 7: The 16-year-old cousin of the 5-year-old Opelousas boy who was shot and killed late last month has been charged with second degree murder and illegal carrying of a firearm by a juvenile.

According to klfy.com, Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow says the teen admitted to bringing the gun that killed Jon’Qualon Pitre as he and his 7-year-old brother apparently were playing with it. Opelousas Police say they are still investigating.

Chief Gallow says the suspect is the boyfriend of the child’s aunt and they all lived together. He says initially the teen was cleared of charges because he said he was not present. But forensic evidence indicates that was a lie.

Sunday, March 2: Jon’qualon Pitre, who was shot at point-blank range in his front yard Thursday, has been taken off life support after he was declared brain dead yesterday. Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow tells KATC the five-year-old’s organs will be removed and donated this afternoon.

The investigation into the incident continues as law enforcement determines a seven-year-old’s involvement in the shooting. The child was allegedly the only other person present in Pitre’s front yard when he was shot.

A 16-year-old, who wasn’t a resident where the shooting occurred, was initially brought in for questioning about the incident. He’s since been cleared.

Saturday, March 1: An Opelousas five-year-old shot at point-blank range in the head Thursday afternoon is now brain dead.

The parents of Jon’qualon Pitre tell KATC they haven’t decided whether they’ll keep him on life support.

Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow says the 16-year-old boy arrested in the incident has been cleared as a suspect, and only Pitre and a seven-year-old are believed to have been present at the time of the shooting.

Police are now investigating how the seven-year-old may have been involved in the incident.

Friday, Feb. 28: A 16-year-old was arrested overnight after a five-year-old boy in Opelousas was shot.

According to police chief Perry Gallow, the teen admitted bringing the gun to the victim’s home two weeks ago, but he said he was not there at the time of the shooting. Police found the gun just ten feet away from the child, Gallow said.

Gallow said the teen is evidently a friend of the family.

The boy was listed in critical condition at a Baton Rouge hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, Gallow said.

Gallow said the teen was charged with illegal carrying of a firearm. Police continue to investigate.
