The factors in choosing a college to attend can be wide and varied but one of the big criteria for many is its proximity to home.

According to the annual American Freshman: National Norms survey, 57% of students choose schools 100 miles or less from where they grew up. About three-quarters of U.S. college kids stay in-state.

Of course staying in state will save you money. You'll not only save on tuition big time but also on things like travel expenses such as gas, airfare and more.

Having said all that, Forbes put out their rankings of the best colleges and universities nearest you in a state-by-state roll call. (So basically, the best college in each state.)

The top spot in Louisiana went to Tulane University in New Orleans.

Founded in 1834, Tulane is of one of New Orleans' oldest institutions. It's actually the largest private employer in the New Orleans area and is the region's leading education and research center.

Three-quarters of freshmen there receive school grants averaging $26,000.

There are also 24 sororities and fraternities, as well as over 200 clubs to engage students' interests.

Nationally, Forbes has Tulane as Top College No. 134.
