"The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams" star Dan Haggerty passed away on Friday after a battle with spinal cancer. He was 74.

In the 1974 movie "Grizzly Adams", Haggerty played a man who was wrongfully accused of murder, so he heads into the mountains, makes friends with the animals and adopts an orphan bear club.

The movie was actually based on a real-life trapper who lived in California in the 1880s. The flick was so successful, it was turned into a TV series that aired on NBC from 1977 to 1978. There was another movie in 1981 and a TV movie in 1982.

Haggerty made the news for a lot of wrong reasons later in life. In 1985, he spent 90 days in jail for selling cocaine to two undercover cops.

In 1991, he was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. And in 2008, his wife died after she wrecked her motorcycle while not wearing a helmet.

Haggerty was an avid biker, having appeared in several biker films early on in his career including "Easy Rider", "Angels Die Hard" and "Chrome and Leather".

Dan Haggerty is survived by his five children.
