Just before 3pm Thursday, Fieldwood Energy, a Houston based firm, reported an explosion at its Echo platform located about 12 miles off the Louisiana coast. The Bureau of Environmental Safety and Enforcement said that the platform was not in production at the time. At the time of the report there had been no indication that any oil had spilled into the Gulf.

In a story published by CBS News, company spokesperson Shannon Savoy released this statement in regards to the incident.

"One employee of a contractor was fatally injured and a second contractor employee was seriously injured. We have accounted for all other personnel who were working at the facility."

According to other reports all of the injured have been transported from the rig and are being treated at an onshore facility. The incident occurred at the West Delta 105 "E" facility, which is located offshore Louisiana. The investigation in the cause of the explosion continues.
