Just about 500 miles, that's the distance between Louisiana's southeastern coast and the projected landfall location for Hurricane Michael. Michael is currently located 420 miles south of Panama City Florida in the southern Gulf of Mexico. However, the preparations for the effects of Michael have already begun, even 500 or so miles away.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has announced that Elmer's Island will be closing today. The closure is a precaution against the potential of coastal flooding that will likely take place as a result of the passing of the hurricane. The closing of the island is set to begin at 3 PM this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has placed all of Louisiana's coastal parishes under a coastal flood advisory. Weather service officials believe the strong easterly fetch provided by Michael will raise tides an average of one and half to two feet. Should this occur minor coastal flooding will be likely.
