Officials with  Louisiana's Department of Transportation and Development told us to be careful what we wished for when we wished for repairs on the I-10 bridge over the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles. So far the project has been going smoothly as repairs and inspections began about six weeks ago on the eastbound lanes of travel.

The shift to continue the work in the westbound lanes of travel is now underway. That means motorist trying to make the drive from the Acadiana area westward into Texas can expect longer than average delays in crossing the bridge.

As of this morning, work had not begun on the westbound lanes of the bridge but in the westbound lanes of the Interstate leading up to the bridge. Reports of lane closures from Exit 31 to Exit 33 might catch motorists off guard since those areas are still a few miles from the actual bridge itself.

Just because the focus of the construction is beginning to shift to the westbound lanes doesn't mean that eastbound traffic won't be affected. There will continue to be intermittent lane closures on both I-10 and the Loop 210 over the next several weeks as this phase of the project is expected to wrap up sometime in June.
