Horror fans have been waiting for months. Stephen King fans have been waiting for years. And after a week of teasers and sneak peeks, the first trailer for It, Andres Muschietti’s highly-anticipated adaptation of King’s classic horror novel (or one half of it, anyway) is finally here to give us our best look yet at that divisive new take on the iconic evil clown. Beep beep, we’re all gonna float.

Warner Bros. has released the first official trailer for It, starring Bill Skarsgard (Hemlock Grove) in the role of an evil entity that takes the form of a menacing clown named Pennywise. Early sneak peeks at Pennywise were mocked, with fans criticizing the clown’s frilly Victorian-era costume — the only time that outfit scares anyone is probably when Pennywise goes to fetch it from his spectral closet and a moth flies out, every. damn. time.

But in motion, and in the context of the film (or the trailer, at least), it’s a little different and definitely a little more effective. That costume is still A Choice, but it’s the attitude and performance that ultimately makes the character and, let’s be real: There’s no way anyone could ever measure up to Tim Curry’s iconic portrayal in the 1990 miniseries. And while the clown is a crucial element, the kids and their relationships are arguably twice as important — if that stuff doesn’t work, nothing will, and judging by this trailer, that stuff totally works.

Directed by Andres Muschietti (Mama), It also stars Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Jaeden Lieberher (Midnight Special), Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Nicholas Hamilton, and hits theaters on September 8.
