The final contestant to earn a golden ticket during ‘American Idol‘ on Sunday night was 24-year-old Jason Hamlin. His friends call him ‘Wolf,’ and it’s easy to see why. The golf course mechanic is a larger, much hairier Johnny Cash lookalike.

So it was no surprise that the singer used a Cash song to get to Hollywood. After giving a lackluster rendition of Creedence Clearwater Revival‘s ‘Midnight Special,’ he added some fury to ‘Folsom Prison Blues.’ The mini-set list was enough to convince a worn out judging panel to move him along to the next round.

Wolf admitted he hadn’t been singing long. He first picked up the guitar — which he calls a ‘git fiddle’ — three years ago when his father handcrafted it for him. The original piece even had a howling wolf on the stock. Mr. Wolf passed away one year ago, and Hamlin admitted that if his father were aboard the U.S.S. Midway with him during his audition, he’d be “giddy” and proud of him.
