Juandre Gilliam was 22 years old. He was a former quarterback for Jeanerette High School's football team. Those that knew him said it was his dream to be a police officer. He earned the right to wear the uniform of the Jeanerette Police and late Tuesday that dream came crashing to a very tragic end.

Gilliam made a routine traffic stop and the two persons in the vehicle he pulled over decided to make a run for it. In the pursuit that followed Gilliam lost control of his police cruiser and he crashed. It is speculated that the two vehicles came in contact with each other.  The injuries he sustained in the crash later took his life at a New Iberia hospital. Now the town of Jeanerette and the Jeanerette  PD are mourning the loss of one of their own.

Chief Marvin Grogan of the JPD told the Louisiana Radio Network when asked about Gilliam,

"A good, energetic person.  Always on time, prompt for work.  And caring and concerned for the community."

He went on to say the loss of Gilliam has hit his department especially hard.

"Just ask everyone to keep us in their prayers."

Two suspects were held in the case, one remains in custody. 21 year old Antre Joseph of New Iberia is being held in connection with Gilliam's death. A 16 year old juvenile who was in the vehicle with Joseph was questioned and released.  Joseph is being held on charges of manslaughter and aggravated flight from an office. Another man 57 year old Clint Rogers is being held on charges of criminal mischief for obstructing the investigation. It was Rogers' truck that Joseph was driving at the time of the incident.

Jeanerette Police and Lousiana State Police are continuing their investigation into this incident.
