If Lafayette Was A Candle, This Is What It Would Smell Like

If there was one scent to represent the city, what would it be?

Lafayette is a unique city, with lots of flavors, but how would that translate to a candle? I decided to ask my Facebook friends and over 100 comments flowed in ranging from food to the unique smells throughout town.

Could you imagine being away from Lafayette, but being able to purchase a candle that you could light anytime you wanted to "come home?"

In order to achieve the perfect Lafayette nostalgia, try one of these Hub City candle scents:

Evangeline Maid Bread Factory

If you're in the Downtown/Fightingville area between University and the Thruway, you may have been around when the bread is baking at the Evangeline Maid Bakery off Simcoe Street. It's enough to make you salivate.

Meche's 

There's a reason why you don't see any Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts franchises in Lafayette, and it's all in the taste of our deliciously local Meche's donuts. Imagine lighting up a candle and getting that fresh glazed aroma. Yum.

Black Pot Residue

There are so many food options when it comes to what a Lafayette candle could smell like, but that one pot known as the staple of your maw-maw's kitchen arsenal is the all-encompassing choice.

Flood Waters

It's no secret that tropical downpours, hurricanes, or any heavy rain in Acadiana can cause problems for residents, so it's not surprising that people suggested this scent for the Lafayette candle.

Traffic

I don't think I would want to light a candle that smells like exhaust, but it's definitely something that a lot of locals suggested. While I'm not sure if "traffic" has a specific scent, it's something that Lafayette is infamous for.

Gumbo

Have you ever had a roux-scented candle? This would be the candle that we would burn in cooler temperatures, but at that point, it would probably just be better to cook an actual gumbo instead.

King Cake

Beads, booze, and barricades. Mardi Gras is one of our favorite times of the year and just like chasing chickens and parades, King Cake is a staple of this local holiday. Put it in a candle and have your own Mardi Gras party whenever you want.

Boudin

Whether you're a fan of T-boy's award-winning boudin out of Mamou or the pepperjack boudin balls from Billy's, this candle would bring you home in an instant (and probably make you very hungry too!)
