Lafayette Council Fights Back On RV Ordinance

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel's decision not to enforce an ordinance banning the long-term use of recreational vehicles as housing in unincorporated areas of the parish drew strong reaction Tuesday from Council Chairman Kevin Naquin.

Durel's decision comes despite the council unanimously overriding his veto of the ordinance in November. Durel said the ordinance is too vague and not well written, so he will not enforce it.

Durel said the ordinance, sent to the council by the planning, zoning and development department, gives him the discretion of enforcing the restriction on one individual and not on another, which is why he vetoed the ordinance.

Councilman Jared Bellard told The Advertiser (http://bit.ly/1m4MeHp) the council discussed amending or tweaking the ordinance to address Durel's concerns, but that has not been done.
