LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) -- The man accused of getting into a tussle with a woman shortly before the start of the 2012 Independent Mardi Gras parade has been found guilty of misdemeanor assault.

Glenn Stewart had been arrested Feb. 21, 2012, after he punched Erin Fitzgerald in the face, knocking her out cold. Fitzgerald is the step-daughter of Cherry Fisher May, an owner of the Ind. newspaper.

Fitzgerald allegedly tried to remove several banners on Stewart's float that referenced May's 2010 drunk driving arrest. The float also depicted May drunkenly driving the float.

According to KATC TV-3, Judge John D. Trahan went as far as to call Stewart a liar as he delivered his decision.
