The Arbor Day Foundation has again given Lafayette the distinction of being named a Tree City USA.

This is the twenty-fourth year in a row that Lafayette has received the designation for our "commitment to effective urban forest management".

In order for Lafayette to receive the designation from the Arbor Day Foundation, the city must meet four requirements:

  •  A tree board or department
  • A tree-care ordinance
  • An annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita
  • An Arbor Day observance and proclamation

City Parish President Joey Durel had this to say about the designation,

“We are once again honored to be named a Tree City USA.  Through the work of PlanLafayette and now Project Front Yard, Lafayette is committed more than ever to the beautification and revitalization of our community. Possibly second only to eliminating litter, planting trees is one of the easiest, most cost-effective tools we can use to beautify our city.”

Trees benefit a community in a variety of was according to the Arbor Day Foundation:

  • Cleaner air
  • Improved storm water management
  • Energy savings
  • Increased property values and commercial activity

A partnership of the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters along with the Arbor Day Foundation make theTreeCityUSAprogram possible.
