The Texas Southern Tigers, a member of the SWAC, are one of four teams that will be vying for the championship in the Lafayette, La. NCAA Softball Regional at Lamson Park this weekend.

Texas Southern, who will come into the regional with an RPI ranking of 253, is 31-18 on the year.

The Tigers finished in first place in the western division of the SWAC this season, with a 15-2 record, before winning the postseason SWAC Tournament title.

A 33-16 squad in 2013, Texas Southern is hitting a .340 as a team, along 21 home runs, 312 runs batted in, and 71 stolen bases.

Offensively, the Tigers don't have a lot of power, with only two players with more than seven home runs, but they do have five hitters batting a .387, or better.

Junior Chelsea Guenther leads the way at the plate for Texas Southern, hitting a .471 with 40 runs batted in, while Princess Daniels (.463), Thomasina Garza (.408), and Jessica Miller (.405) are all hitting over a .400.

Garza and Krystalina Yockman are the biggest power-threats for the Tigers, with eight home runs apiece.

Texas Southern will run, with 71 stolen bases in 78 attempts this season.

Pitching-wise, Texas Southern brings in an overall combined earned run average of 3.83 into the regional.

Freshman left-hander Samantha Jimenez has had the most quality innings, and sports a 7-4 record, with a 3.08 ERA. Jimenez is a pitch-to-contact pitcher, with 43 whiffs in 84 innings

Junior Jeniece Tillman (5-3, 3.26) and sophomore Madison Staton (11-6, 3.67) are also both likely to see time in the circle for the Tigers this weekend.

Texas Southern will be making their first regional appearance.

This season, Texas Southern has non-conference wins over Nicholls St., Southeastern Louisiana, Akron, Huston-Tillotson, Southern Miss, Sam Houston St., and Incarnate Word.

The Tigers are 0-2, all-time, against Louisiana, with the last meeting coming back in 2004.

Texas Southern is 0-3, all-time, against Texas, and 0-0, all-time, against Mississippi St.

The Tigers are, without a doubt, the underdogs of this regional. Taking on the likes of Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi St., Texas Southern will have to play exceptionally well to win a game. That being said, they earned their way in, have nothing to lose, and have enough hitting to make things interesting.
