A team that has been an obstacle to the Lafayette Little League All Star team (11-12 year old) in the past was no match for them Sunday night. South Lake Charles, who defeated Lafayette last year in the State Tournament, was eliminated by the boys from the Hub City in an 11-4 final.

After two scoreless innings, Lafayette scored a run on an infield throwing error by SLC in the top of the 3rd inning. The 4th inning then proved to be a huge one for Lafayette as they scored seven runs, capped off by a 3-run homer by Ross Gaspard. That made the score 8-0 Lafayette.

In the 5th inning, with Lafayette now leading 9-0, SLC made some noise, scoring four runs on four hits. That cut the lead to 9-4, but that would be the closest SLC got.

On the mound for Lafayette, Henry Schoeffler pitched 3-plus innings of scoreless baseball before yielding to Matt Savoie and eventually Gaspard.

With the victory, Lafayette advances to take on Bossier City in a 6:30 p.m. Monday night game. Lafayette, who lost in heartbreaking fashion to Bossier City Saturday night, must beat Bossier City twice to win the state tournament at Chappapeela Sports Park in Hammond.

Meanwhile, the 13-14 year old Lafayette Little League All-Star team had Sunday off after winning their second game of the tournament in Shreveport, defeating Jackson Parish 10-0 in five innings. Lafayette will play Shreveport Monday night at 8:00 p.m. in the winners bracket final.

The two Lafayette Little League games are both tentatively scheduled to play on Sportsradio ESPN 1420.
