The Happiest City, one of the best cities for low-cost retirement, one of the tech-savvy up-and-coming cities; Lafayette has been on its share of "good" lists, but this next one isn't so good.

According to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program (as reported by Security Baron), Lafayette, Louisiana ranked #13 on the list of the cities in the US with the highest rate of burglaries.

The cities were grouped according to their metropolitan statistical area. The numbers reflected the burglary rate per 100,000 inhabitants. The FBI, as per their 2016 report, says that there were 685.2 burglaries per 100,000 residents in the Lafayette Metro Area.

I don't know about you, but with the reports of door handle pullers on the rise, could our spot on this list be on the rise, too?

Here are some common sense tips which may help keep that from happening: remember to lock up your vehicles. Don't keep valuable items in them at night, especially in plain sight. Don't post on social media when you will be out of town. Don't leave packing material from high-dollar items at the road for the recycling or trash trucks. Install lighting in front of your home, over the door to your shed, etc. Security cameras might help deter would-be burglars. Set up a trip-wire attached to a Claymore mine near your property (okay, that last one was a joke and is VERY illegal but, admit it: you've thought of it, right??!).

Crime will never go away, but we can all take steps that may diminish the chances that it happens to us!
