A 59-year-old Lafayette man has died after getting hit by an Amtrak train around noon Monday.

Lafayette Police Corporal spokesman Paul Mouton says it happened at the railroad crossing at North Loop. Cpl. Mouton says the man was hit by the train as he was trying to walk across the tracks. The impact of the train threw him about 50 feet.

The man has been identified as 59-year-old Mckensey J. Portalis of Lafayette.

Witnesses stated that all of the warning devices at the crossing appeared to be operating correctly at the time of the crash. There were no injuries on the train.
