Louisiana State Police Troop I Spokesman Stephen Hammons tells KPEL that four people in a passenger car have died after colliding with a Lafayette Parish School bus.

Lafayette Parish School System spokesperson Angela Morrison says several students on the bus sustained minor injuries, while a coach on the bus is being treated for severe injuries.

The Lafayette High baseball team was traveling to Berwick to play a game when the crash happened.

A car that was traveling in the opposite direction had a tire blowout, and the car crashed the median crashing into the bus.

Assistant Superintendent Sandra Billeadeau and Transportation Director Damon Evans have been in touch with state police and local hospitals and are coordinating the district's response.

Morrison says as in all accidents involving LPSS buses, the driver will be tested for alcohol or other substances, but at this time we have no reason to believe the bus driver to have been at fault.

Morrison says in fact, state police have indicated to them that her actions likely prevented greater injury to her passengers.

The four people in the passenger car died at the scene.

The crash happened in the 8000 block of the Hwy 90 E. Frontage Road which is in the Centerville area.

The school system quote says, "”At this time, we are working to obtain more information and confirm the status of those taken to area hospitals. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life and our hearts go out to the family of the victims.”
