LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) -- Lafayette School System Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper announced Wednesday afternoon that parish public schools will remain closed Thursday.

Cooper said he did not want students waiting in temperatures Thursday morning that were expected to be in the low- to mid-20s.

"When we consider that the newest reports indicate the weather conditions continue to impact the conditions of roads, bridges and overpasses, then the decision to close becomes apparent," Cooper said. "We all agree, I am sure, that the risk of a tragic accident is not worth the reward of one forced extra day of instruction."

Equipment and pipes at some schools still needed to be assessed or repaired, Cooper said.
