There had been discussion earlier in the week that perhaps changes were coming to Lafayette Parish School Board policy on cellphones at school. The change to the existing cellphone policy would allow students to have cellphones on campus but restrict their use.

Currently the policy does not allow a student to bring a cellphone on campus. Violation of that policy will result in the confiscation of the device.

The change in policy was expected to be taken up at last night's meeting but the board decided to push back deliberation until later in the month. The new policy as it was proposed last month would allow middle school students permission to have a cellphone on campus. It would also allow high school students to carry and use cellphones before and after school, during lunch and in some classroom situations.

Changes in that policy have already been suggested, the most noticeable one would be to disallow high school students use of a cellphone during lunch. That amended policy is expected to be considered and voted upon in the August 20th meeting of the Lafayette Parish School Board.
