LAFAYETTE LA -

A 13-year-old Lafayette teenager was killed in a house fire on Christmas Eve.  Firefighters say it happened around 6:30 pm last night in the 100 block of Martin Luther King Drive.  When they first arrived, they say there were heavy flames venting from the front side of the single family dwelling.  Firefighters say they were told immediately that someone may be inside and entered the dwelling to perform a search and rescue operation. However, the victim, thirteen year old Brandon Gobert, did not survive.

Milton Gobert was home with his son, and firefighters say he made several attempts to get his son but couldn't due to the intense heat and smoke. Milton Gobert was transported to a local hospital for treatment of severe burns and smoke inhalation.

The dwelling sustained heavy fire damage, and investigators determined that the fire originated in the kitchen. The family was utilizing the stove top for heating; the open flames ignited nearby combustibles.  Investigators are not sure at this time if smoke alarms were installed and operating.
