A tornado watch has been posted for much of Acadiana until 5am. Severe thunderstorm warnings have been posted along and ahead of a line of very heavy thunderstorms that stretches across the state at this early hour.

As of 1:30 this morning the leading edge of the heaviest weather had just pushed through Opelousas, Lafayette, and Abbeville. This line of storms with strong gusty winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning was moving to the east at 30 mph. At that current rate most of the heavy weather should be out of Acadiana within the next several hours.

Behind this line of thunderstorms a large rain shield extends back into Texas. Forecast models show there is a significant threat of rain in the area at least until midday. Rain chances will taper off in the evening hours and the forecast for Wednesday holds only a 40% chance of widely scattered showers and thunderstorms.
