The little crawfish. Nothing makes me madder than spending my money on a sack of mudbugs only to find that I got sacked with a lot of tiny crustaceans that aren't really worth the trouble of eating. Obviously I am not the only one who feels this way. There is now legislation being proposed that would limit the size of crawfish that can be sold to consumers.

Under State Representative Eddie Lambert's proposal crawfish that measure under three and a half inches in length would be considered too small for sale and therefore against the law. Lambert says he has heard from both wholesalers and consumers on the issue.

"You go buy a sack, you don't know what's in it, you open it up and then you notice it's full of little bitty crawfish.  It's like the old saying, 'You're buying a cat in a sack.'  You can't tell."

Lambert made those comments in a story published by the Louisiana Radio Network.

Lambert's proposal also has an allowance that allows 5% of each sack to have undersized crawfish. He believes this is fair to both producers, consumers, and wholesalers since filtering out the smaller crawfish will become an added expense. It will also be very difficult to do so there has be some allowance to make it fair.

The penalties for selling undersized crawfish would be a fine of $350 for the first offense as well as the potential for up to 60 days in jail.  Lambert's bill will be heard and discussed in the House Natural Resources and Environment Committee in the coming days.
