Happy Leap Day, ya'll! February 29 only happens once every 4 years, so we don't know a whole lot about it, but with the help of our friends at People Magazine, we'll give you some Leap Year trivia to throw out at your next cocktail party.

 

People born on February 29 are called 'Leaplings' or 'Leapsters' - this includes actress Dinah Shore, rapper Ja Rule, and serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

 

If you were born on February 29, that might not be your legal birthday - in the UK your legal date is March 1, in New Zealand it's February 28.

 

Leap Day doesn't actually happen every 4 years, like we always thought - it's pretty technical, but some Leaplings might have to wait up to 8 years for their actual birthday to re appear.

 

Leap Day has an odd marriage tradition attached to it- some say that if a woman proposes to a man on February 29 he has to say yes. If you saw the 2009 movie 'Leap Yea'r with Amy Adams, you'll know that clearly, that is not always the case.

 

Hattie McDaniel - the first African American to EVER win an Academy Award, got her Oscar on February 29, 1940, for 'Gone with the Wind'. Considering all the huge #OscarsSoWhite controversy this year, this is definitely significant.

 

February 29, 1944 was the day a polish lad named Karol Jozef Wojtyla would receive his life calling, and later  become Pope John Paul II.

 

On February 29, 2008, Britain's Prince Harry was removed from military service in Afghanistan, after it was discovered that he had already been fighting there for months.

 

Davy Jones, of the band The Monkees, died on the last Leap Day - 2012.

 

The Beatles took home 2 Grammy Awards on February 29, 1968, for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
