We are fat and we are happy. You can't deny that about many of us that call the Bayou State home. With our abundance of good food and our let the good times roll attitude it's easy to see why Louisiana could be considered a state with a weight problem.

Over the past 30 years studies have shown that Louisiana is one of the most obese states in the country. The good news is recent surveys show we are improving in that area. Granted the improvement is small, it's still a step in the right direction.

In a recent report by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Louisiana was found to be the 6th most obese state in the nation. That is down from our usual number one or number two position that we have held for the past 30 years. We usually swap the top spot with Mississippi.

Researchers at LSU's Pennington Biomedical Research Center say this news is encouraging. It shows that initiatives through out the state to promote healthy diets and exercise are beginning to pay dividends. Researchers are hopeful the trend will continue especially in the area of childhood obesity.
