Education is one of the hottest topics in the state of Louisiana right now. What and how we're teaching our kids will be debated many times over in the coming months as the state prepares to elect a new governor. While many can find fault with our state's schools, the numbers don't lie. Louisiana has one again set an all time high for the number of students that will graduate. That's the fourth straight year our state has seen that number increase.

John White, the State Superintendent of Education, told the Louisiana Radio Network that 75% of students who entered 9th grade in 2010, graduated in 2014. That's an increase of 1.1% over the previous year.

"So the last 4 years has seen remarkable progress and consistent progress in a way that is benefiting more than 3000 kids annually,"
This past year saw an additional 3,440 students graduate and White attributes that directly to the  men and women in the classroom. He says the dedication of teachers and principals and parents is really paying dividends for Louisiana students.
White also suggested that the state is seeing better graduation rates and increasing numbers of graduates for students in minority racial groups.  Of the 1600 more students who graduated in 2014, 1200 of those students come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
"Meaning that three quarters of students that are now graduating additionally are made up of students from disadvantaged backgrounds,"
