Residents of Louisiana are getting a new driver's license and identification card design, however, it looks much like the old ones.

So why the update? The new look will contain features for greater security, protection of privacy and resistance to tampering. The new license also has multiple layers of security features, all linked to each other.

Some of the examples are:

  • Tri-color overlay
  • Multi-colored fine line printing
  • "Ghost" image of the customer's photo

The last time Louisiana had an update was back in 2001 with the introduction of digital licenses for improved security.

Office of Motor Vehicles notes that customers are not required to obtain a new license or identification until their current one expires.

OMV anticipates it will take a minimum of four years to phase out the old design.
